The phrase "Die Luft ist Kühl" (The air is cool) is taken from a poem by Heinrich Heine (Die Lorelei) and is written in German on the spiraling part of the helix. The poem refers to a sad feeling overtaking the poet as he views the Rhine river and the giant rock called Loreley, which is said to have caused accidents for boatmen. It is juxtaposed with Hebrew verses from Psalms such as Psalms 90, 6: "In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered". This juxtaposition of texts sets the tone for the painting.

הביטוי "האויר צונן ואפל" הוא תרגום לשורה משיר של  היינריך היינה בשם לורליי, שמופיעה על החלק המסתובב של הספירלה בגרמנית. השיר מתייחס להרגשת צער המשתלטת על המשורר כאשר הוא צופה בנהר הריין ובסלע הענק המכונה לורליי, שנאמר עליו שגרם לתאונות רבות של שייטים בנהר. ביטויים בגרמנית מהשיר מופיעים בציור לצד פסוקים מתהילים בעברית למשל מתהילים צ, ו', "בבוקר יציץ וחלף, לערב ימולל ויבש". עירוב הטקסטים יוצר את האוירה לציור זה.‏
